Art of Phrasing

In this series, we feature renowned educators in Southeast Asia to lead you through the essential elements in the art of phrasing. Several common band and orchestral excerpts will be used to demonstrate these ideas. This tutorial series will definitely come in handy in helping you and your ensemble to tackle these barriers. The Art of Phrasing series is an initiative by The Rondo Production and is supported by Cultural Economy Development Agency (CENDANA).

Art of Phrasing

An online tutorial series that aims to guide the audience through the intricacies of phrasing.

"I don't need words. It's all in the phrasing."
Louis Armstrong

American jazz musician

PHRASING IS LIKE STORYTELLING

In storytelling, we can make the narrative more compelling by placing an emphasis on selected words, or by altering the speed of our delivery. Similar strategies can be adopted in music making.

PHRASING IS A KIND OF LANGUAGE

Reading music can sometimes be compared to the reading of text. Our eyes naturally search for structure; we connect the dots to make sense of smaller phrases, and to conclude with a bigger picture.

PHRASING PRESENTS YOUR CHARACTER THROUGH MUSIC

Phrasing is more often instinctive. Thus, different musicians phrase a section of music differently. These variations in phrasing differentiate one musician from another.
