Shawn Yap began his musical journey as a tubist at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 2013 with Diploma in Music Performance, under the tutelage of Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Tubist, Hidehiro Fujita, and Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Tubist, Brett Stemple.

He is currently in his final year of Master’s Degree at Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (University of the Arts) in Zurich, studying under Professor Anne Jelle Visser from Zurich Opera and Steve Rosse from Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

As a soloist, Shawn was the first ever brass player to clinch the first prize at the annual NAFA Music Essentials Concerto Competition in 2013. He was also selected to participate in the International Tuba Euphonium Conference Solo Competition which was held in the United States, and as the principal tubist of Asian Youth Orchestra 2016.
