U-En was educated in and graduated from the University of Melbourne where he attended Trinity College. On returning to Malaysia in 1998, he managed the Kuala Lumpur Symphony Orchestra (then the oldest orchestra in Malaysia) before working as a journalist and editor in a publishing firm.
Outside of work U-En has been deeply involved in the arts, particularly theatre and music. From 2006 to 2016 he was an active theatre actor, director and writer, and since 2016, he has given much of his time and energy to Wicked Music People (WMP)—an early music ensemble based in Kuala Lumpur, which is devoted to providing a platform in Malaysia for both the performance and appreciation of music from the late Renaissance and Baroque periods. WMP believes in taking performances out of concert halls and into cafes, schools, warehouses and other non-traditional venues, but the ensemble is also no stranger to formal concerts and has played at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, as well as to sold-out houses at the 2018 George Town Festival.
