Meet the Stars: RCO Brass
Miroslav was born in 1989 in Varna, on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. From the age of 11, he developed his skills on the trumpet, becoming known on the classical stage as an extraordinary emerging soloist.
After his graduation from the Bulgarian music school Dobri Christov, Petkov commenced his studies in Germany, working under Max Sommerhalder at the Hochschule fuer Musik Detmold. During his studies in Detmold, he began to have immense success with his trumpet playing, winning prizes at many international trumpet competitions, including The YAMAHA International Trumpet Contest-Germany, Jeju International Brass competition-South Korea, Lieksa Trumpet Competition-Finland, Citta di Porcia International-Italy, Competition, and The ARDMusikwettbewerb, Germany.
At the age of 28, Petkov has made great accomplishments in his trumpet career and since 2016 he has been appointed as the new Principal Trumpet of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. Alongside this, he continues with his solo appearances with orchestra, his teaching appointments at international masterclasses, and the adjudication of international music competitions.
From childhood, alongside his classical studies, Petkov was always interested in exploring varieties of folklore music. His development and combining this with various genres (including jazz and contemporary music) have given him the opportunity to play with different musicians, in different settings, on a broad spectrum. Miroslav is a professor at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
