Meet the Star: Kevin Thompson, Malaysian Wind Music Prize 2023
Kevin Thompson was appointed to the trombone section of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016 by Maestro Jaap van Zweden, where his duties in the orchestra include playing Second and Principal Trombone, as well as bass trumpet and euphonium. Prior to moving to Hong Kong, Kevin was Principal Trombone with the Malaysian Philharmonic (1998-2012), and Co-Principal Trombone with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra, in South Africa (1992-1998). From 1989 to 1992, he was the trombone and euphonium player of Foothills Brass, a full-time professional brass quintet based in Calgary, Canada.
Although born and raised in Canada, Kevin has spent most of his professional life overseas. He was trained at the Universities of Victoria and Toronto (Canada), and did post-graduate work in England, with Denis Wick (former Principal Trombone of the London Symphony). Kevin has also worked with major orchestras in Norway, Sweden, the UK, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, and China. With these orchestras he has toured and recorded in North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe, and played in many of the great concert halls of the world.
Promoting the euphonium as a solo and chamber music instrument is another of Kevin’s musical passions. He has recorded two critically-acclaimed solo euphonium recordings and has shared the beauty and versatility of the euphonium with people around the world at recitals and masterclasses.
